TERRI MOSS entered the sport of boxing in early
spring of 2000 at 34 years old. Her trainer at that
time, Chicago native "Doc" Keppner, suggested that
she learn to work other aspects of boxing if she was
interested in being involved in the sport, because he
didn’t see a real future for her as a fighter due to her
age and late start. He taught her to work corners,
the work of a cutman, the behind-the-scenes aspects
of matchmaking and booking fights, and told her to
try to teach boxing to college students and people
that wanted to learn the workout for fitness.
At Doc’s gym in Athens, Georgia, she aided him in teaching what she knew of the workout to small
groups of students and interested clients. After a time Doc was sending Terri to work professional
fights by herself for a couple of his local fighters. She worked many fights as chief second, and later
handled contracts and booked fights for them on her own.
In July 2002, Terri began training with world renowned trainer Xavier Biggs in Atlanta, GA, to pursue
her own boxing career leaving the training positions behind. In May, 2004, under the supervision
and tutelage of Xavier, Terri took up full time boxing and boxing fitness training at KBX Gym in
Alpharetta, GA. By January 2005, at the opening of Decatur Boxing Club in Decatur GA, and once
again under the wing of Xavier Biggs, Terri became the sole trainer for women at this gym alongside
her training position at KBX. Over the next two years Terri conducted over 2000 hours of boxing
fitness classes and developed excellent boxing skill in many fitness clients. Additionally, Terri has
honed real talent in a select few women that have shown a sincere interest in learning the sweet
science. While building her experience as an aspiring young trainer, Terri has also worked closely
with Xavier Biggs in the development of Xavier’s own “Execubox” program, and has traveled
throughout the Southeast with him conducting seminars and classes for several small private gyms
and large gym franchises including Gold’s Gyms. Terri has also taken their program to various
locations of Ladies Workout Express and has conducted boxing fitness programs at Georgia
Institute of Technology. With Xavier she has hosted health fairs and boot camps, sparring expos,
and has worked with him side-by-side as he promoted professional fights.
With so many areas to work, Terri finally decided
to focus all of her attention on her work at the
Decatur Boxing Club where she works to put the
finishing touch on her own boxing career and
builds a solid following of boxing fitness and
personal training clients. At Decatur Boxing Club
Terri also continues to develop talent in her own
small stable of fighters. She hopes to retire her
own boxing career some time in 2007 and focus on
her fighters and clients.
"Now that I’m a World Champion I can use what I’ve learned to help other women become World
Champions if they have a true committed desire to do so. The experiences I've had in boxing, good
and bad, will benefit those I train and make me a great trainer. I have learned that being a
Champion has nothing to do with wearing a belt around your waist. There are plenty of people in
boxing wearing belts that are far removed from the definition of "Champion". True Champions are
not just self serving. They bring honor to their title, carry the responsibility that comes with it
proudly, and use it to serve and help others. It is a philosophy, a form of character, a responsibility,
and a will and determination that makes a person shine brightly in the crowd long before they are
adorned with their medals and trophies. Xavier Biggs defines it “Champion of Life.” It is a
philosophy I want to take into the gym every day and share with other women. While I will never
encourage women to compete, as this sport is NOT for everyone, I will say just as I did the first day,
“Nothing compares to this.” For those who have what it takes and truly desire to compete I will
share all of my experience, for those who do not, I will show them a work-out that is totally supreme
to anything they can do physically. The challenge is interesting and fun and can take your physical
fitness to unimaginable levels with any real consistency. After retirement my next goal is to have
one of the first boxing & fitness facilities in the region to serve an all-female client base.
